How to Become a Commercial Kitchen Equipment Technician in Canada

Commercial kitchen equipment is a skilled, in-demand trade, and one where specialists are genuinely scarce, so a certified technician rarely wants for work. It sits on the refrigeration trade, adds gas and cooking-equipment skill, and pays accordingly. Here is the path from getting started to a certified commercial foodservice technician.

Start on the refrigeration trade

The skilled core is refrigeration and air conditioning mechanic certification, the 313A trade in Ontario. Most technicians come in through an apprenticeship with a service company.

• Register an apprenticeship with a commercial foodservice or refrigeration service company
• Learn the equipment: walk-in and reach-in refrigeration, ice machines, and prep refrigeration
• Work toward your refrigeration trade certificate, compulsory in seven provinces, and the Red Seal for mobility

Add the gas ticket and refrigerant handling

Commercial kitchens run on gas and refrigerant, and the tickets to work on them are separate and required.

• A provincial gas fitter licence, such as G2 or G3 in Ontario, for gas cooking equipment
• Refrigerant handling certification for refrigeration work
• These open up the cooking line and the refrigeration side of the job

Add the skills and credentials that pay

• Combi ovens, fryers, ranges, steamers, and warewashing systems
• Commercial refrigeration diagnosis and sealed-system work
• CFESA certification, the industry credential, offered through major service employers as factory and CFESA Master training
• Clean troubleshooting that solves an emergency call in one visit

Land your first role

Apply to commercial foodservice equipment service companies and the major national employers, emphasize any refrigeration, gas, or electrical background, and be clear about your tickets or your plan to earn them. Set up a job alert on a board built for the trade so new openings reach you before they fill, because specialists are scarce and service companies move fast when a capable technician appears.
